Order of the Phoenix, Chapter Twenty-Two

Prior to the release of Deathly Hallows, there were loads of passages in the Harry Potter books that we loved speculating about – reading every word ever closer, reading between the lines to figure out what was going on, and discussing them (endlessly). Occasionally, though, there were passages that we knew were important but didn’t get talked about much because we really didn’t have enough information to do much speculation. One of these was a question that Rowling suggested we ask, which was “Why did Dumbledore have James’s Invisibility Cloak?” Another one was from this chapter – “What the heck does Dumbledore mean by ‘In Essence Divided?'”

Generally with these sorts of questions, somebody would try to start a conversation about it, a few people would chime in with some rough ideas, and then it would kind of fizzle out, as we had more or less exhausted all the possibilities. In this case, though, we did get a big clue as to what was going on in book six, but it still remained one of the mysteries of the series all the way to the end (and, some would argue, until Rowling explained it even later).

Anyway, enough reminiscing on my part – on to the chapter!
