Order of the Phoenix, Chapter Thirty-One

I have to confess, for all these years I’ve thought Hermione a bit silly for freaking out all the time over exams. But now that I’ve seen what O.W.L.s are really like – not to mention the ramifications they hold for students’ careers and, therefore, lives – I can’t blame her one bit. Or for that matter, poor Hannah Abbott, who seemed to have a complete breakdown. What if someone in Harry’s class has a lifelong ambition to do something with Astronomy, and their O.W.L. exam got interrupted? Or, for that matter, there’s someone we’ll see in this chapter who’s been in a job she clearly loves for quite some time – what if she’d gotten an A. instead of an E. on one of her exams? Craziness.

Of course, you have to feel particularly bad for the students sitting the exams this year. O.W.L. craziness may be bad, but it’s nothing next to O.W.L. craziness when you also have Harry Potter as your classmate. ;)
