Half-Blood Prince, Chapter Twenty-Seven

I mentioned in my last post how the first time I read this book, I’d jumped up and screamed at the end of virtually every chapter in the last third of the story; if that was the case then, it was nothing to my reaction after finishing this chapter. I was lucky that I hadn’t known it was coming – I was very careful to cut off my Potter-related internet use at the first sign of secrets being leaked, and went to a small neighborhood bookstore to avoid crowds. Even then my wife had an inkling of what was likely to happen when she made the mistake of reading the chapter titles before starting reading the book. But while I may have had an inkling that Dumbledore might not be sticking around past this book (even Rowling said in an interview once that “the wise old wizard with the beard always dies”), I had no idea how or when it might happen. Oh. My. Goodness.

  1. Even though I was spoiled, I still freaked out! Either I was completely absorbed in the book or I managed to convince myself that the spoilers weren’t real…
