Deathly Hallows, Chapter Twenty-Nine

One of the interesting things I’ve encountered while working on this project (which, unbelievably, is now just eight posts from completion) is the nature of J.K. Rowling’s chapters. We know that she lays out her books in terms of chapters – for example, on her website is a copy of her planning chart for Order of the Phoenix in which she lays out her various plots and subplots and charts what action will go into each chapter. And the chart is early enough that major details were later changed (including Umbridge’s first name and the names of the Order and the D.A.). So it’s been interesting, as I’ve worked through them, that I’ve really begun to compartmentalize them in my head. Some chapters are action-based (like the battle of the Seven Potters); some are a single scene more or less from beginning to end (such as Harry’s lessons with Dumbledore); others seem like mildly interesting asides but are actually setting up loads of information that will be important later (such as Harry’s meeting Sirius in Hogsmeade in book four).

This chapter is interesting because it’s the last of what I think of as “transition” chapters: it really is about Harry moving from point A (in this case, the Hog’s Head) to point B (Ravenclaw Tower), without any particularly noteworthy events taking place in between. While the artwork for these chapters tends to be sparse – there are only so many drawings of Harry walking through the halls of Hogwarts, for example, or chatting with his friends – I enjoy them on another level because they typically set us up for a very dramatic, fun, and hopefully art-worthy ride to come. So I’ll be back very soon with chapter thirty, and if you don’t already check here regularly, you might want to start doing so over the next couple of weeks. After all, we’ve only got eight more chapters to finish this thing out, and don’t think for a minute I’m not planning on doing it in style. ;)

  1. I’m so excited about this! I love this site on so many levels – the insights, the artwork, the idea, even the layout here is so, so fantastic. Thank you, Josie, for your great work here. It’s very enjoyable and I check the site at least twice a day – every new chapter makes that day happier :)
A huge thank you, I’m looking forward to the last chapters!

  2. Can you post a link to the chapter layout you mention? I can’t find it. Thanks.

  3. sam, I’m not sure what you mean by chapter layout. Are you talking about my categorizing the chapters? If so, then it’s not something I’ve written on paper, just in my head. But I might be misunderstanding you….

  4. Josie: I think he means the J.K. Rowling file on OotP.

  5. Ahh! That makes more sense. The file is posted as a hidden object on Rowling’s website,; you can also just see the file here. :)

  6. Thanks!
