Checking In

I was chatting with some friends last night and this site came up, and as I was thinking about it this morning I decided I’d stop in and say hello. I know it’s been a while. :)

I built this website after the seventh book came out, with the hopes that it could have a lasting place in the fandom. All of the other websites I’d seen weren’t really designed with longevity in mind so much as satisfying a fan base living in the fervor of the book releases. It’s now been seven years since our last book, and three since our last movie. And while that fervor has died down, there is still a new generation coming to learn and love the books (my son is five, so will be joining that generation soon), and I hope that this website can continue to be a place for them. That was my goal anyway, and given the million or so visits it’s gotten since my last update, I like to think I’m achieving it in some way.

I’m still very proud of finishing my initial chapter-by-chapter project. There are a couple of pages that to me seem conspicuously missing from my secondary projects, and I’m sure I will be back to finish them one day; there is also a new generation of artists whose work I hope to one day incorporate (and discover!). And of course when I read back into some of the things I wrote years ago I’m rather embarrassed by the writing, though I’m learning that’s a lifelong process. Regardless, right now my head is in a lot of places, and this unfortunately isn’t one of them. But I haven’t forgotten this project, or the community here that helped make it so wonderful.

Anyway, thanks for being here. I hope you enjoy the work as much as I enjoyed putting it here. Be well! :)

  1. I am currently doing another re-read of the series with my husband, and am going through your chapter-by-chapter summaries (again!), along with the comments (which also have great insights)! I have picked up on so many things I would’ve missed out on had it not been for your site. I’ve recommended it in the past years to several friends. LOVE it; thank you!

  2. I’m with Loony – I’ve just recently finished another re-read, and went through each chapter page on here as I was going, it really added to my enjoyment of the books and I’m already looking forward to doing it again soon :-) thanks for a fantastic resource!

  3. Thanks for the update, Josie. I check back here every once in awhile to see if there’s anything new. I’ll be watching my email for update notices! And I don’t think you have anything to be embarrassed about in your writing. It’s an ongoing learning process, as you say. Thanks for the note!

  4. Hi Josie, it’s good to hear from you! I dearly love this site. My HP Meetup group is currently doing a reread of the books, and before each one I go through the chapter by chapters for discussion topics and the valuable insights provided by you and the community. So thank you for this website, and I eagerly await the day you post some new content!

P.S. Just an idea, but is there fanart from Jo’s story about the Quidditch World Cup this summer? That could make for a fun page.

  5. Hello, Josie, welcome back.

  6. Of all of the fan sites out there, this is the one that most closely matches the energy I have around JKR’s profound language about the world, as explored through these magical places, people, and choices. Thanks for continuing.

  7. It’s always wonderful to hear from you, Josie! I doubt I will ever unsubscribe from updates because I love this site and commiunity too much.
Speaking of the next generation of readers and what with Halloween having just passed, my daughter is almost three and a half and her father has trained her to recognize Spiderman and Batman plus she knows the young literature classics (Clifford, Curious George) and I decided last night that I’m just going to start showing her a bunch of fan art so she can get all excited about seeing Harry Potter, too. I kept thinking “in a couple of years” but really, where’s the fun in that? :)

  8. I absolutely love your site, and I follow along with your chapters every time I re-read the series. The artwork and insight are just brilliant! I feel like there is always something new to find. I also have a 5yr old and she also loves looking at the “Harry Potter” pictures on your site. Thank you so much for keeping up the site!

  9. Almost forgot about this feed/chapter summary analysis, it’s been a while:)
It’s always good to revisit these books occasionally, and this feed for that matter; it’s kind of like dropping in on old friends!!

With all the crappiola YA fiction (and fan fiction) coming out now.. well it really makes you appreciate these books even more!
    Cheers Josie <3

  10. Josie, I am thankful that you posted, and have stated that you’re going to keep the page up. I’ve been somewhat disappointed by the Pottermore website just because there’s no real artwork involved in it. When I have read the books (or as I am doing now, listening to the US version in my car), I like to go back and look through the artwork to be reminded of the visual clues that the artists have given.

Also, I love the essays. It’s helped me to develop an even deeper understanding of the Potter books. For instance, all what is happening off-screen. I hope that some day you’ll get the energy and drive up to do an essay on the last two books. I have ideas personally for some of the things happening off-screen, but more often than not I’m finding myself agreeing with your thoughts instead!

Again, thank you for keeping this going. It’s a joy to be able to see this continue.

  11. Thanks for the update. I love your chapter-by-chapter parts and essays, and love the art you feature on this site.
