Sigh.

Back in November, I had to have a pretty major surgery (between the anesthesia and the painkillers, I have virtually zero memories from a 2 1/2-month span). It didn’t occur to me before I went in that my domain name, hpcompanion.com, would be up for renewal during that time, and because I was so spaced out, I missed the renewal deadline.

At which point some enterprising company, recognizing the traffic this site used to get, swooped in and bought it for advertisers.

I established this new domain name, hp-companion.com, but I had a problem: the 500+ pages on this site had been built with absolute links, meaning that any time you clicked a link on the site it tried to take you to the old domain, and therefore sent you to ads. For various reasons changing this was super challenging, and I haven’t had the time or space to attempt it. So the site has mostly sat derelict.

I’ve now finally begun going back through and updating. All of the menus will take you to the correct place. I’ve also worked my way through Book One and fixed all of those pages, including links to a great many of the images that had also stopped working. I’m hoping to make my way through enough of the site soon that it’s fully functional again, and I’ll post here (and try to share in a couple of other places) when I do.

In the meantime, thank you for finding this place again, and my deepest apologies for its state. It’s been quite a year for me – things are/will be okay, but quite a year. I’m devastated to have lost the domain, as we’d built up a pretty nice little corner of the internet here – traffic has of course completely plummeted since. I’ve never made income from the site, but I liked to know that people were enjoying it. Hopefully that will gradually pick up again once everything is functional.

Anyway. Thanks for sticking around, and love to you all. I’ll let you know when more is up to date. <3

Sad to hear about your surgery, hope you’re doing well now.
Coincidentally, I started reading Harry Potter series again last week after some 3 years and the first thing I did was to visit this site. Last time when I read the series, this website was my actual companion and has been in my bookmarks since then. I was dismayed to see that the links were broken and have been thinking to contact you. Today I received a mail notification about your post and was delighted to read that you’ll be working on the website.
Thanks for finding time for this and I’m sure several people will be happy. If you need some help with the website, please let me know, I’d be more than happy to help you out in any way I can. Wish you a speedy recovery and thanks again. Cheers!

  2. Hi Josie,

Is there anything special about the website that the files which need changing aren’t just plain text? If they are, it should be relatively simple to find and replace all of the links using something like Visual Studio which is detailed here: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/a40ywt0a.aspx

If that’s all it is, I could probably do the whole thing for you in a few minutes. If it’s more complex than that, let me know and maybe we can figure something else out to keep you from having to do it all by hand.

  3. So glad to see you back! This site is terrific and I appreciate all your work. Take your time, and I hope all is well!

  4. So happy to see the site back! Really happy!
    Hope you are well!

  5. The important thing is that you are on the mend! It sounds like a *mountain* of work to get everything fixed. Thanks for everything you’ve done and will do to share this terrific site with us!

  6. I’m so happy you’re back! I actually tried to show this site to my boyfriend recently and was so sad it was down that I even tried to email you, but of course your email address was on the old domain too. Some of my favourite Harry Potter memories are going through your posts with my best friend in high school, I think you have the best touch with the details and art you pick out. :)

Hope all is well with you and you’re recovering/recovered. I’m really glad to hear from you. <3

  7. This is just incredible!

After a tough day I decided on a long shot whim to check if my favorite pick me up website had somehow returned and what do you know it has!

Josie, thank you so much for all the hard work you put into this wonderful site. I am very sorry that it’s been a challenging year for you but am glad to hear that things are now on an upswing. And I really am overjoyed that you’re back.

If there’s anything that can be done to help restore hp-companion to its former glory (and beyond!), I hope you won’t hesitate to reach out here. I can’t be alone in wanting to give back to this little corner of the internet.

  8. Josie if you need any help with correcting the links, I would be happy to be of assistence. I’ve been a huge fan of your work, and I continue to support the existence of this site for friends who lare only now entering the work of this site. Let me know going forward, I know I’ve attempted to e-mail you before.

  9. How wonderful to hear from you again! I was so worried when I realized the link I was sharing with new friends wasn’t going to your beautiful site. Glad all is well and sorted out!

  10. Glad things are going well, thank you for all of your work throughout the years.

  11. Hi Josie. There is a plugin for WordPress to update all the URLs but I think you have to self-host the blog, it doesn’t work with WordPress.com. Anyway, I am Patricio frmo The Rowling Library and I love your website. if you want host or any help about this, I would love to do it. Let me know.

  12. So pleased you are better and delighted that the site will be back. Definitely missed all the wonderful work you did. Really glad you are well. Jean
